Steve
Person-Centred Counsellor, BACP Registered
Steve is a counsellor with a strong passion for men's mental health, trauma and understanding what makes us who we are. He knows how important it is to feel seen and valued, and he wants to offer people the opportunity to experience just that.
Sometimes, life leaves us with things we don't quite know what to do with. Perhaps you've been through experiences that still affect you today, find yourself repeating patterns you don't understand, or feel as though you've lost your sense of direction. You might be used to getting on with things, keeping yourself busy and putting everyone else first, without really stopping to consider how you're doing yourself.
For men in particular, talking about these things doesn't always come easily. We can become so accustomed to carrying on, keeping things to ourselves and getting through whatever life throws at us that we lose touch with what we're actually feeling. Until, sometimes, it catches up with us.
Steve works from a person-centred and relational approach. He sees you as the expert in your own life, recognising that nobody knows your experiences better than you do. His role isn't to tell you what to think, how to feel or what decisions to make. It's to work alongside you to explore your experiences, understand yourself better and discover what might help you move forward.
However, if you're looking for a therapist who will only give you lots of “mm’hmm, and how does that make you feel?” Steve probably isn’t the therapist for you. Instead he’ll be gently inquisitive and curious about you from the word go.
Steve believes in genuine human connection. He's interested in your experiences, the things that have shaped you, the beliefs you hold about yourself and the patterns that might be keeping you stuck. He draws on a range of therapeutic approaches to suit your individual needs, whether that means exploring past experiences, making sense of difficult emotions or looking at what's happening for you right now.
Sometimes, understanding why we feel or behave in certain ways can change how we see ourselves. Sometimes, we need to revisit things we've spent years avoiding. And sometimes, we simply need the space to stop, think and work out what we actually want from life.
There's no one-size-fits-all approach. The work is about understanding you, your experiences and what matters to you.
Steve is particularly passionate about men's mental health. He believes that understanding ourselves, our experiences and the things that have shaped us can make a real difference to how we live our lives and connect with the people around us.
Sometimes, we can find ourselves reacting to situations in ways we don't fully understand, repeating patterns we wish we could change, or feeling disconnected from who we are and what matters to us. We might know something doesn't feel right without being able to put it into words.
Steve is interested in exploring these experiences with you, not just looking at what's happening now, but understanding how your past may have influenced the person you've become. This might mean exploring trauma, childhood experiences, grief or loss, or trying to make sense of a loss of purpose or direction.
For Steve, counselling isn't about being told how to live your life or being given a list of things you should do differently. It's about having the space to think, question, understand and discover things about yourself, with someone who is genuinely interested in hearing your story.
You don't need to arrive with the right words or have a clear idea of what you want to work on. You can start wherever you are, and work things out together.
Steve sees counselling as something that can reach far beyond the counselling room. When we begin to understand ourselves and our experiences, it can change how we relate to our partners, our children, our friends and the wider world.
He describes this as a ripple effect: one person beginning to heal and understand themselves can have a positive impact on the people around them, helping create healthier relationships and a more connected community.
For Steve, being part of that process is a real privilege. He believes in the value of creating a space where people can explore what life has thrown at them, feel genuinely understood and begin to find their own way forward.
You don't need to have everything worked out before you come to counselling. You just need to be willing to start exploring.
