How did you develop an interest in these areas?
The key concepts behind Gestalt therapy are rooted in European existential philosophy and ancient Eastern philosophies such as Zen Buddhism and Taoism, which resonate deeply with me. This connection inspired me to train as a Gestalt therapist. Through my experience and practice, I have developed a pluralistic approach, recognizing that the experiential, explorative, and creative methods of Gestalt therapy can be beautifully complemented by other therapeutic approaches. For instance, the active and solution-focused CBT, the interpersonal, ego-state focused Transactional Analysis, the story-focused and meaning-making Narrative Therapy, and the non-directive, client-focused Person-centred approach. Integrating these approaches allows me to effectively tailor therapy to meet the diverse needs of my clients.
Having had the enriching experience of living in various countries and immersing myself in diverse cultures, I have gained a profound understanding of the complexities and challenges associated with feeling different and experiencing a sense of otherness. This unique perspective has illuminated how such feelings can deeply influence our relationships and interactions with others. Consequently, I have developed a special interest in supporting clients in cross-cultural and multicultural relationships, as well as clients from ethnic minority communities, those with neurodiversity, and diverse gender and sexual identities.
Previously, I worked for several years as a Children and Young People counsellor at a local youth charity and as a Counsellor supporting stroke patients' recovery at the Stroke Association. These experiences have helped me develop specialized skills and knowledge in working with young people and individuals affected by stroke and other chronic conditions.
